The Link Between Stress and Depression

Depression is the most misunderstood and misdiagnosed disorder of all emotional problems. Dr. Donald Dossey, author and internationally expert on disaster stress and depression says "You can take steps to protect yourself and your family, and limit the emotional and physical damage that depression and stress can cause." At the Stress Management Center/Phobia Institute in Asheville, NC, he has done extensive research in anxieties, phobias and stress and has uncovered some startling findings.

Behaviour scientists have found what you can expect from depression and prolonged anxiety and stress. Are you and your family mentally and emotionally prepared to ward off any psychological scars the depression and stress may cause? Do you know how to identify the signposts of depression and stress?

Research has shown that depression may be caused from too much stress and that stress can come from suffering from depression. These symptoms can show up in three areas as physical, mental or emotional, and/or social or work related problems or a combination of any or all of these. Just like the earth's aftershocks after an earthquake, excessive depression and stress can cause symptoms that can pop up an hour, the next day, months or even years down the line. And undetected, may be misdiagnosed and can destroy lives.

The most insidious thing about depression and stress is that victims are, more often than not, deluded into thinking that their prevailing problems are caused by too much work, poor relationships or from outside invaders like allergies, germs or viruses. Family members, friends, and often the victims themselves, feel that the suffering person is malingering, loafing or just plain lazy when, in fact, the victim is not any of these.

Without the correct, expert professional help who can use safe and predictable ways to treat depression and stress, there is a high probability of a breakdown in one or more of these areas.

Physical symptoms may show up as an immune system slow down resulting in: frequent colds, gastrointestinal problems, including flatulence, diarrhea, and constipation. Eating disorders, overeating, anorexia, bulimia, are often the results. Skin rashes, hair loss, headaches, allergies, muscle spasms, back pains, high blood pressure, excessive drinking and /or substance abuse, heart attacks and even cancer are considered results of stress and depression.

Mental and emotional symptoms of mood swings, irritability, argumentativeness, rage, anxiety, phobias, sleeping disturbances, obsessive or compulsive behavior, depression and more have been observed as resulting from depression and stress.

Social and work related symptoms of impaired memory (losing things, misplacing things, forgetting appointments), concentration problems with lack of focus and short attention span, difficulty in completing tasks, inability to set priorities, accident proneness, and difficulty thinking clearly or making decisions may be due to depression and stress.Dr. Donald Dossey has developed Self Test that people can administer at home to identify signposts and recommends specific stepping stones people can take to protect them from depression and stress.
